Bishop Hellmuth

Location

Bishop Hellmuth is a small and beautiful historic neighborhood that is located in Old North of London. It’s incredibly close to downtown. It sits just a couple of blocks away from the Thames River, and is a short drive to the University of Western Ontario. It’s located right below Doidge Park and and ends at Oxford Street. The boarder lines of this small and friendly neighborhood don’t even stretch to Richmond and Colborne Street, so it has a very intimate feel.

Neighborhood

This beautiful, small neighborhood has its own neighborhood association and is part of a Heritage Conservation District, which helps to increase the security within the neighborhood, helps to restore and preserve the natural heritage, and it helps to decrease the number of properties that are owned by non Londoner residents. Through the Heritage Conservation District, a number of the large historic homes have been converted from duplexes back into large, beautiful single family homes. Living in a Heritage District often increases the value of the properties and it increases a real sense of community within the neighborhood.

This neighborhood is really friendly to live in. The community holds Canada Day celebrations, neighborhood events, and is full of the good old fashioned neighborly sort.

It’s an absolutely gorgeous area of London to live in with large mature trees throughout, breathtaking churches that date back to the 1870s, and beautiful heritage homes making up the residents. Each house has stunning architectural detailing, with beautiful ornate woodwork on the exteriors and gorgeous brickwork. Many of these homes are have unique front entrances and most have large front porches that make you want to grab a cup of tea, sit on a porch swing, and wave as neighbors walk by on an evening stroll.

While most of the homes in this area are single family homes, some have been converted to be duplexes or even triplexes, since these homes were created to be large and spacious. The average list price in this area is in the high $500s,000s.

Schools

Bishop Hellmuth is close to Kings College and the University of Western Ontario. For public, Catholic, and French Immersion Elementary and Secondary schools, there are multiple options. St. George Public School is part of the neighborhood and within walking distance.

Amenities

While this small historic neighborhood is almost entirely residential, it’s nearby to great amenities that makes this a wonderful place to live.

In terms of shopping weekly essentials, there is a Valu Mart , a Rexall, a bank, a gas station and an Urban Outfitters within walking distance. Not much farther, Sunripe Fresh Market , The Beer Store , unique downtown boutique shopping, and the Covent Garden Market are all just a quick drive away. Going just a short distance (either East or West) down Oxford Street will bring you to shopping plazas with restaurants, conveniences, and home essentials.

Besides the neighborly entertainment that happens within Bishop Hellmuth, people living in this neighborhood are never far from fun. It’s close enough to downtown that catching a play at The Grande Theatre, seeing a Knights game at Budweiser Gardens, and enjoying the nightlife of clubs, bars and pubs can keep anyone with a healthy social lifestyle satisfied. Not only that, but Bishop Hellmuth is so close to UWO that it’s easy to grab a cheap show at the movie theater in Western, which has incredible prices and shows all kinds of cult classics.

For those with a sweet tooth, Razzle Dazzle CupcakesBlack Walnut BakeryChill, and Haven’s Creamery Ice Cream are all close by. For those who enjoy fine dining, Reverie, the Black Trumpet, and Bertoldi’s are all excellent choices that you don’t have to go far for. There are also a lot of close by fast food options, such as Subway, Wendy’s and Tim Hortons. And of course, downtown London is full of so many great local eats and pub grub that any foodie would love living in a location like Bishop Hellmuth.

Bishop Hellmuth has Doidge Park right above it, making that the go-to park for most in this neighborhood. It has a tennis court, basketball court, baseball diamond, playground, and lots of steep hills that make for fun tobogganing in the winter. There’s also a movie night in Doidge park throughout the warmer months of the year, which is free fun for families.

Gibbons Park is close by as well. It’s one of the largest parks in London and has lots of green space on the Thames River, two playgrounds, a splash pad, tennis courts, and even an outdoor pool.

Victoria Park is another great choice for residents of Bishop Hellmuth as it’s close by and often hosts fun events throughout the summer, such as RibFest, Sunfest, and even concerts!
